The next step in zero-emissions driving

Instead of being powered by electricity stored in a battery, Fuel Cell Electric vehicles produce their electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen in a fuel cell stack. Refuelling their hydrogen tanks from a pump takes less than five minutes, and once on the road, you’ll enjoy zero-emission journeys that are as safe, convenient and enjoyable as in a conventional vehicle.

Clean and Safe Energy

Hydrogen is clean, safe and all around us. It’s so common it makes up 70% of matter in the universe. This allows hydrogen to be locally sourced and, if made with renewable energy, can be completely carbon-free.

A pan-European initiative to create a hydrogen refuelling network is underway, with approximately 200 stations already open and more planned each year. Refuelling is safe, easy and as familiar as it is in a conventional car, from the pump and nozzle to the keypad and information screen.

Fuel Cell Electric vehicles like the Mirai are just the start for hydrogen power. As a viable alternative to fossil fuels, hydrogen not only has the potential to cut global emissions in public and commercial transportation, it’s already moving us towards a society that’s entirely hydrogen-based.

From fork-lift and heavy-duty trucks to the Caetanobus and Energy Observer ship, Toyota fuel cell technology is already making a difference on land and sea. And from next year it will power an entire community. Toyota’s Woven City, a prototype city at the base of Mount Fuji, will offer a fully connected ecosystem powered solely by hydrogen fuel cells.
